The poet alone
\nis writing an ode
\nto her shoes–
\nher shoes which
\nonly she can fill,
\nher shoes of purple suede and green leather
\nthe color of palm fronds,
\nher diamond-studded boots,
\nher feathered cowboy boots,
\nher seven-league epic poetry boots,
\nher little silver haiku boots,
\nwith tiny heels that twinkle,
\nher first-person platform boots
\nand her backless glass slippers
\nmodelled after Cinderella’s
\n(one lost, at midnight,
\nbecause of a running man),
\nher huntress boots of India-rubber,
\nher lover’s boots joined at the ankle
\nlike leg irons,
\nher pink baby booties bronzed
\nfor posterity,
\nher daughter’s burning Reeboks,
\nher lover’s laceless sneakers
\nleft in the guest room closet
\nfor her to kiss
\nyear after year
\nafter year.<\/p>\n

Darling shoes,
\nbeloved feet
\nten toes to walk me
\ntoward my true love,
\nfuck-me pumps to fuel his passion
\nstiletto heels to stab him
\nif he strays.<\/p>\n

Shoes tell you everything.
\nShoes speak my language.
\nTheir tap tap tap on the airport runway
\ntells me the story
\nof a lovely, lonely woman flying after love–
