A balanced budget approach: A conversation with the President <\/strong><\/p>\n

Washington DC, White House \u2013 On March 6, 2013 Organizing for Action (OFA) hosted a Policy Briefing to give an update to the President Obama\u2019s agenda and how the issues affect the local community. I have been part of the weekly legislative updates that occur every Wednesday, along with other administration top officials, staff and Obama supporters. OFA is a newly created mobilizing force to implement the President\u2019s proposed policy reform under the direction of Jon Carson. Prior to that, Obama for America created by the National Democratic Committee, where I served in leadership director\u2019s roles in both 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns, served as the community project to push for Obama legislative issues.<\/p>\n

What is a sequester? How will it affect my state, New York? <\/strong><\/p>\n

The series of automatic cuts, known as the sequester poses a real threat at the local level for New York. The President is willing to compromise and offers a moderate plan, however the Congress is not meeting him halfway due to some extreme Republicans, who are hijacking the views of the entire Republican party. President Obama is working with the Congress to reduce the deficit by $2.5 trillion and has put forth a balanced plan to reduce it to $4 trillion in total.<\/p>\n

According to the White House, this year alone the sequestration impact for New York means:<\/p>\n

1. 70,000 students will lose access to support programs and special education,
\n2. 4,150 low-income students will lose work study jobs to help pay for college,
\n3. 120 schools will lose funding to help disadvantaged students; around 4,520 fewer low income students in New York would receive aid to help them finance the costs of college and around 4,150 fewer students will get work-study jobs, that help them pay for college,
\n4. $108,000,000 cut in Army base operation funding,
\n5. $1,447,000 cut in funding that provides meals for sick and homebound seniors,
\n6. 1,600 victims of domestic violence will lose access to support services,
\n7. $12,869,000 cut in funding to ensure clean air and water and prevent pollution,
\n8. 7,170 fewer children will get vaccines for diseases like measles and whooping cough,
\n9. $1,070,000 cut in funding for response to threats like infectious diseases and natural disasters,
\n10. More than 100,000 formerly homeless people, including veterans, would be removed from their current housing and emergency shelter programs, putting them at risk of returning to the streets. (White House Statistics).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

During the legislative update for the Policy briefing explaining the President\u2019s agenda held on 6 March 2013, Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak stressed the need for the Congress to act on a balanced approach to the budget:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are back to the political game because some people can\u2019t get the fact that Obama is the president, no matter what he proposes they are against it. The extreme budget cuts affect real people\u2019s lives. They affect primarily things that are structural and will have a long term impact. This means students will drop out of college and families will go on public assistance due to childcare cuts.\u201d (Mayor R.T. Rybak, March 6, 2013 Policy Briefing).<\/p>\n

The Congress needs to act on Obama\u2019s proposed plan and take the more balanced approach. These cuts will have devastating impact on both the micro and macro level in New York and across the nation. During the week of March 18th the White House will hold a series of press conferences and community events that highlight these budget cuts. I encourage everyone to call your member of Congress at the congressional switchboard phone number 202.224. 3121 to demand an end to the sequester and vote in favor of the President\u2019s plan to avoid this fiscal crisis.<\/p>\n

State of the Union Address: A phone call from the President<\/strong><\/p>\n

On February 12, 2013 I received an invitation from David Simas, Deputy Senior Advisor of The White House for the State of the Union Address. At 9:00 pm President Obama laid out for the nation his policy priorities such as new jobs and investments, health care, energy, comprehensive immigration reform, etc. At 10:30 pm I received a phone call from the President organized by Jon Carson (Executive Director of OFA), and Sara Alamin, (National Organizing Director). It was an honor to receive the first call President Barak Obama made on his way to the White House after he delivered his incredibly inspiring State to the Union Address Speech. President Obama stated on the phone:<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to remember people like you who will help us realize the vision I talked about tonight. This is the first phone call I am making on the way to the White House. We have got to get organized and work together. We are going to have to make the change. It will be tough and there will be resistance in Congress. This is not about me, it\u2019s about us. Our success depends on when we work together, take responsibility, build a strong chapter, make sustained efforts and get activated.
